Nonlinear Propagation of Laser Beams near the Critical-Density Surface in the Plasmas of Direct-Drive Targets

چکیده
LLE Review, Volume 95 179 Introduction The interaction of laser beams with plasmas near the criticaldensity surface is an important characteristic feature of directdrive inertial confinement fusion (ICF) experiments.1,2 One of the main laser–plasma interaction processes is stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS), which involves the decay of an incident light wave into a scattered light wave and an ionacoustic wave. The process of forward SBS accompanies the filamentation of laser beams and can change the spatial and temporal coherence of laser light propagating into the target.3,4 The process of backward SBS5 is important because it can potentially deplete the laser-beam power delivered to the target. The spectrum of SBS-backscattered light is also useful as a diagnostic of plasma conditions.

MODELING LASER–PLASMA INTERACTION PHYSICS UNDER DIRECT-DRIVE INERTIAL CONFINEMENT FUSION CONDITIONS Introduction
Introduction Laser–plasma interaction (LPI) processes taking place in indirectand direct-drive targets differ significantly in several ways. Plasma electron densities ne in hohlraum targets are typically a few percent of the critical density n m e c e = ω π 0 2 2 4 , so that the main instability mechanisms are stimulated Raman and stimulated Brillouin scattering (SRS and SBS, respectively), whi...
متن کاملModulational instability of dust ion acoustic waves in astrophysical dusty plasmas with non thermal electrons
Propagation of dust ion acoustic waves in plasmas composed of nonthermal distributed electrons and stationary dust particles is investigated. Nonlinear Schrdinger equation is derived to describe small amplitude waves, using the reduction perturbation technique. Modulation instability of dust ion acoustic waves is analysed for this system. Parametric investigation indicates that growth rate of...
متن کاملMultibeam stimulated brillouin scattering from hot, solid-target plasmas.
We report on multibeam, laser-plasma interaction experiments in plasmas relevant to future direct-drive-ignition experiments. Six interaction beams are incident on preformed plasmas containing critical density. Stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) shows strong evidence of electromagnetic wave seeding of side- and backscattering. The data are also consistent with shared ion waves driven by the ...
متن کاملInvestigation of Coherent and Incoherent Laser Beams Propagation Through Turbulent Atmosphere
In this paper propagation of combined laser beam through atmosphere is investigated. Laser beam is combined via lens array arrangement. Turbulence is considered as an affecting factor of atmosphere and its effects on transverse coherence length (Fried parameter), peak intensity, propagation efficiency, and spot size of the laser beam is investigated. Coherent and incoherent combined beam are co...
متن کاملIon acceleration from laser-driven electrostatic shocks
Multi-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations are used to study the generation of electrostatic shocks in plasma and the reflection of background ions to produce high-quality and high-energy ion beams. Electrostatic shocks are driven by the interaction of two plasmas with different density and/or relative drift velocity. The energy and number of ions reflected by the shock increase with increa...
